An outline of the sixth wave of the Japan Child Panel Survey (JCPS2016)
- Respondents of the survey
The respondents for the Japanese Household Panel Survey (JHPS) and Keio Household Panel Survey (KHPS) in 2016 with children in either elementary school or junior high school as of March 2016 and children (boys and girls born between April 2, 2000 and April 1, 2009) were targeted.
- Survey period
JCPS2016 was conducted in February-March 2016. Although the survey was conducted at the beginning of the following school year, the school years of the children are reported as of March 2016.
- Survey method
The question asking the respondents whether they agree to participate in JCPS2016 was mentioned on the confirmation sheet with the KHPS2016 questionnaire. The test and questionnaire for the child and parent were sent by post for those who agreed to participate in JCPS2016 with a book coupon as a reward. The test and questionnaires completed by both the child and parent were sent back by post. The survey was self-administered at home.
- Survey structure
The JCPS survey comprises two booklets (one for the child and the other for the parent).
① Test and questionnaire for the child: Includes basic academic performance tests for math, Japanese, and reasoning and questions about school, education, QOL, and so on.
* For the math and Japanese test, nine different test batteries corresponding to the school year were constructed.
* For the reasoning test, two different sets of tasks were designed: one for 1st-3rd graders and the other for 4th-9th graders.
* For the question about school and education, two different sets were designed: one for 1st-3rd graders and the other for 4th-9th graders.
* For the question about QOL, Kid-KINDLR for children aged 8 to 12 Children's Questionnaire was used for 3rd-5th graders, and Kiddo-KINDLR for children aged 13 to 16 Teenagers' Questionnaire was used for 6th-9th graders. Details of the scale were on the web at http://kindl.org/.
* The question about citizenship was asked for 6th-9th graders.
* The question about education plan was asked for 7th-8th graders.
In the instructions, we stipulated that each child must complete the survey on his or her own without consulting with anyone; must time and complete the test portion within 20 minutes; and upon completing the survey, must promptly use an enclosed sticker to seal the booklet before giving it to the parent.
② Questionnaire for the parent: Questions about the educational environment of children, parenting, and the child’s sociality were common for all parents regardless of their child’s school year.
* For the question about children’s sociality, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ: one-sided version for the parents of 4-16 year olds) was used. Details of the scale were on the web at http://www.sdqinfo.org/.
* Parents were required to complete the questionnaire for each child.
- Response rate
Among the respondents to JHPS/KHPS2016, 1,065 households had one or more children born between April 2, 2000 and April 1, 2009. Among these, 598 households agreed to participate in JCPS2016, and 508 households provided valid responses. The response rate was 47.7% based on the number of households.
The number of children within the target age range was 1600. Among these, 751 valid responses were provided from children, and 751, from parents. The response rate was 47% based on the number of children.
